Hike the Big Tree Trail on Meares Island
Travel to and from the Big Tree trailhead by boat, hosted by a friendly local skipper. Walk, unguided, along the well-maintained wooden boardwalk and view old-growth rainforest in all its beauty. Lose yourself in the awe-inspiring ancient trees! The ‘Hobbit-like’ boardwalk hike of the Meares Island Big Tree Trail is 1.2 km. It meanders through an old-growth forest of large Spruce, Hemlock, and giant Cedar trees; some about 6 m (20’) across and approximately 1,500-2,000 years old.
Hiking briskly to the end of the boardwalk and back takes about 40 minutes to cover, however, most guests spend 1 – 1.5 hr. on the boardwalk to ensure a lasting experience. Be sure to bring your camera!
Hikers have the option of doing the full 4km loop trail that goes beyond the boardwalk. Once the boardwalk ends, the path through the forest is all natural so wear some hiking boots. We recommend an additional 1.5 hrs. to enjoy this section for a total of 3 hours.
*This tour is self guided and is not recommended for those with limited mobility or those who use a mobility aid, due to the conditions on the trail*
*We take a zodiac vessel for the short crossing. Dogs are not permitted but we have a dog kennel available at our Tofino station.*
*There is a minimum fare to confirm the vessel*
The Big Tree Trail is not part of the Multi Tour discount offer.
